Císařská louka Island

An artificially created island, which originated with the construction of the main ferry terminal. Today it is home to sports areas and a ferry dock.

Císařská louka Island in Smíchov measures 1.7 km and reaches almost to the Railway Bridge. It is separated from the left bank by the Smíchov Harbour.

Previously, its territory was called the Royal Meadow and actually was not an island, just a wide shore on which in 1297 the great coronation feast of King Wenceslas II probably took place. In the 19th century the meadow became a popular excursion spot where social events and sports matches were held, including horse racing, and in the late 19th century people also panned for gold here.

It is interesting that this island was created artificially by extraction of soil on the western half of the meadow at the end of the 19th century and the construction of the Smíchov dock. Císařská louka Island is sometimes confused with Císařský Island in the Prague district of Troja.

Today the island has a harbour for small vessels, a campground, sports area and the Cinda restaurant. The island is accessible at the southern end by bridge from Smíchov. Since 2008 the Prague 5 integrated transport system runs a ferry wharf on the island..
